In 2008, one of the brothers co-running the Shinkaen Main Store went independent, opening his own restaurant “Shinkaen NAKAZUMA” in Nakazuma-cho, to the west of the city center. The noodles are all hand made by the owner himself and cut extra finely, but have a certain springiness to their texture. They go perfectly with the smooth and refreshing ramen soup. Aside from the famous soy sauce ramen there are a number of other delicious dishes to try.

Beginning trade in 1979 as a kitchen car located in Nakazuma-cho, Kontoki moved to a permanent location in Omachi 9 years later. As the area was full of other bars and eateries, Kontoki quickly became popular among the locals as the go-to place for a final bowl of ramen after a long night of eating and drinking. The store was destroyed in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster, but reopened in the Kamaishi Hamayuri temporary restaurant units within Suzuko-cho district in January 2012.
 
Kotoki is known for its extra fine curly noodles and its light and refreshing, soy sauce-based soup. It represented Iwate Prefecture at the Tokyo Ramen Show for two years in a row from 2011-2012.

Opened in 1970 as a cafeteria-style restaurant in the central Omachi district. In 1983 they began to operate under the name “Ramen & Coffee Aidoru”, and grew in popularity as a café that also sold authentic ramen. The store was damaged in the earthquake and tsunami disaster of March 2011, but was quickly rebuilt and reopened in August that same year.
 
Aidoru’s Kamaishi Ramen is made using a combination of seafood and chicken/pork bone soups, and is served with two meaty slices of roast pork as well as the usual bamboo shoot and seaweed toppings. The “Aidoru Ramen”, a starchy seafood soup containing scallops and shrimp, is also a popular favorite. We recommend ordering a delicious coffee to follow your ramen.

The original Kikuya first opened its doors as a cheap bistro-style eatery in the central Owatari-cho district in 1950. From 1975 onwards, its menu changed to focus more on Chinese cuisine. However, the store front was badly damaged in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami disaster. After operating from the temporary shopping units set up in Tenjin-cho, it moved back to Owatari-cho and reopened in a newly reconstructed store in 2013.
 
The new store is characterized by an elegant white sign and curtain hanging in the doorway, with the same color also utilized in the bright interior design. Its meals all feature a delicious and slightly nostalgic flavor. After reopening post-disaster, Kikuya has begun serving dishes using a kind of traditional salted malt (shiokoji) produced with a local volunteer group, such as the popular Shiokoji Seafood Fried Soba, and Shiokoji Seafood Fried Rice.

Shiokoji Seafood Fried Noodles ¥850 – Made with salted malt (shiokoji) produced by a local soy sauce brewery.

 
Kamaishi Sarashina first opened its doors in 1959, located alongside the main road through Kosano-cho. Although the name Sarashina refers to a variety of high quality soba noodles, the restaurant has always served ramen as well. Its Kamaishi Ramen, with homemade noodles, is one of the most popular items on the menu.
 
Sarashina tops off its Kamaishi Ramen with deliciously fatty roasted pork, as well as bamboo shoots and seaweed, to compliment the light and refreshing soup. The store itself has relaxed lighting, and serves several set meals at lunchtime, in addition to the usual soba and ramen. For dinner it offers a variety of local sake, shochu and umeshu (plum liquor) from all over the country and serves delicious dishes made with fresh Sanriku seafood.
