Shinkaen operated as part of the kitchen car project after suffering damage in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster. After serving from a temporary location, they returned to their original pre-disaster location and officially reopened in June 2015. We wish to express our sincerest gratitude to everyone who gave us their support, and vow to continue serving up our beloved Kamaishi Ramen.

Began in 1971 as the Kawashima Butchers in Kogawa-cho. In August 1978 the Kawashima Meat Processing Center was established, however, as supermarkets began to open their own butchers, specialty stores were less in demand and the owners of Kawashima moved towards opening their own Ramen Bus in 1983. After initially only operating out of a wagon style mini bus, they upgraded to include a large-scale bus and a standard truck size “Ramen Car” in 1993.

The ramen bus uses the local Kamaishi Kawashima offal stew made with white pork offal, and the offal ramen is a particular source of pride for the owners. Their service motto is “quick and delicious”. If you don’t want to go out they will come directly to your home.

Shinraiken moved back to its inner city location and resumed business two years after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster. As a long-standing multigenerational establishment, in its 60th year of business the grandfather in charge handed over the reins to the mother and her third son. They were able to achieve their dream of creating a store well-loved by locals, and vowed to never move away from Kamaishi.

The grandfather and former owner of Shinraiken inherited the recipe for the extra spicy offal before improving it slightly in flavor. The Kamaishi Ramen is also made using his original recipe three generations later and is loved by customers of all ages. The lunchtime menu (11:00 – 13:30) is very affordable, offering all ramen, rice dishes and offal sets for \1,000. The Offal Ramen is a Shinraiken original and one of the most popular items on menu.

The Marusei Shokudo is tucked away within the residential streets of the Noda-cho district. Having opened in 1976, it is a long-standing establishment in the neighborhood. The shop interior has gone unchanged since its early days, and the atmosphere, flavors and prices are also the way they were in the 70s.

Enjoy the retro atmosphere as you enjoy your Kamaishi Ramen topped with roast pork, bamboo shoots and seaweed in the characteristic light soup. The fried rice and vegetable soup are also popular favorites.

Opened in Naka-cho in 1953. After suffering damage from the 1960 Chile earthquake and tsunami, it reopened its doors in the central Omachi district and developed a following as a Chinese restaurant, before being damaged once more in the earthquake and tsunami of 2011. It operated out of a temporarily constructed shopping unit for a short while, then fully reopened within the small-scale shopping facility “Town Port Omachi” in December 2014.

The large roast pork slices, bamboo shoots and seaweed topping Dairen’s Kamaishi Ramen are all part of a recipe that has been handed down for generations. The popular “Rugger Ramen” contains ample vegetables and a “rugby ball-shaped” boiled egg in a spicy miso soup, and allows customers to choose their preferred noodles from the “Forwards” (thick) to “Backs” (thin) range.
